What is the origin of candles?
Candles have been used in foreign countries since B.C. but were introduced to Japan with the arrival of Buddhism. At that time, candles were quite valuable and only a few classes of people used them except for religious ceremonies. It is said that it was not until the Edo period (1603-1867) when mass production became possible that candles became popular among the general public.
How are candles made?
Generally, candles are made by pouring wax into a mold with a thread through the center and cooling it with water. Other methods include dipping the thread into the wax and gradually making it thicker and compressing the wax grains into a mold.
How do candles burn?
When a candle is lit, the flame melts the wax into a liquid, which is then directed to the top by the capillary action of the wick. When it eventually reaches the center of the flame, the high heat causes it to vaporize into gas and burn. The candle burns, continuous reaction from solid to liquid and then to gas.
What makes a quality candle?
A good quality candle has a shiny appearance, is not cracked or bent, and has a wick of the proper length and wax penetration. When lit, there should be no oily smoke and no dripping of wax. The flame should be stable and shine brightly.
How do you extinguish incense and candles?
